5 strand crown

Hello! Today’s braid is a 5 strand crown braid. This is complex kind of braid. Any braid with 4 or more than 4 strand is intricate. I have tried this braid on a mannequin as I could not do it on myself. After several tries, I could actually be able to do on mannequin also. The only reason 5 strand braid is complex is the trouble to hold 5 strands together in hands. The confusion to place the strands into right place would make it more complex! But once the concept is clear in your mind you can easily braid it.

As you’ll know I have already done 5 strand dutch braid, so this time I thought to do 5 strand braided crown!

You’ll Need: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, hair elastics, bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Taken: 15-20 mins

Skill Level: Hard

Hair Length: Any hair length

Steps of Instructions:

  1. Begin by side parting the hair, now pick a section of hair and divide it into 3 equal strands.
  2. Then cross the 1st strand over the middle strand, 3rd strand over the middle
  3. Now add new strand (equal in size of other 3 strands, just next to forehead) and cross it under 1st strand over the middle
  4. Then add new strand (equal in size of other 3 strands, parallel to the newly added strand) and cross it under 3rd strand over the middle strand(i.e new added strand). The First stitch of 5 strand Braid is complete now.
  5. Let’s name the strand to make it clearer. 1st strand (just next to forehead), 2nd strand (just next to 1st strand), 3rd strand or the middle strand, 5th strand (just next to crown area), 4th strand (just next to 5th strand).
  6. Now add new hair to the 1st strand, cross it under 2nd strand and over 3rd strand or the middle strand.
  7. Then add new hair to the 5th strand, cross it under 4th strand and over the middle(while taking a stitch from 5th strand, the middle strand is the newly added hair to 1st strand. This is the key to braid).
  8. The first stitch of the 5 strand crown is complete now.
  9. Continue to braid by repeating the steps 6-7 such that the braid goes in a circular pattern.
  10. Once you reach the other side of parting, there wouldn’t be any scope to add new hair so begin to braid regular 5 strand braid till you run out of hair and secure the ends with an elastic.
  11. Now take the ends of the braid and wrap it around the beginning of the braid, gently placing the braid directly behind the original braid.
  12. Simply add bobby pins to secure everything into place.
  13. Add hairspray.
